When comparing a pest control company, keep the same short checklist for each conversation. That makes it easier to spot what is included, what is still unclear, and what you want to confirm before agreeing to work.
1. Match the business to its public record
Ask for the exact business name and California license or registration number the company wants you to check. Search the Structural Pest Control Board’s official license lookup instructions, then compare the record with the name and number the company provided. Read the status and record details on the state’s site directly. A directory profile or a search-result snippet is not a substitute for the official record, and a public record is not a state endorsement.
2. Confirm the address and service area
Ask whether the provider serves the specific property address, not just the surrounding region. Confirm which legal or operating business will provide the service and who you should contact about the proposal. A company address in a city does not by itself establish that it serves every part of that city.
3. Ask what the written scope includes
Request a written description of the proposed work. Ask which areas and services are included, what is outside the scope, and what could lead to a revised proposal or an additional charge. If you are comparing more than one company, ask each one to describe the same requested work so the proposals are easier to compare.
4. Read the price and agreement terms
Ask for the price and payment schedule in writing. If the proposal renews or involves repeated visits, ask how the schedule, renewal, cancellation, and any additional charges work. The terms depend on the provider and proposal; this guide does not set or estimate local prices.
5. Get timing and preparation instructions from the provider
Ask the company to put any timing, access, preparation, follow-up, or property-specific instructions that apply to its proposal in writing. Direct questions about products, precautions, or what occupants should do to the provider and the applicable public authorities. SoCal Pest Finder does not give treatment or safety instructions.
6. Clarify records and the right contact
Ask what documents you will receive and how to request them later. Depending on the proposal, you may want to keep the written estimate, agreement, payment records, and any visit documentation together. Confirm the company contact for questions about a scheduled visit or a change to the proposed scope.
7. Compare proposals side by side
For each company, note the record name and number you checked, the service area confirmed, the written scope, the price and renewal terms, any stated timing or preparation instructions, and the contact for follow-up. Mark unanswered items rather than filling gaps with assumptions. If a point affects your decision, ask the provider to clarify it in writing before you decide.
